A draft executive order proposed by the White House seeking to “Respect Religious Freedom” would provide sweeping protections to those who discriminate. While federal law under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from religious discrimination, the executive order would allow those same employers to use religion to discriminate against others – whether based on sexual orientation, gender or any other distinction that goes against one’s religion or moral objections.
If signed, the order would give license to employers and organizations to deny benefits such as contraception and abortion as given access to via the Affordable Care Act.
The executive order has not been signed, and whether it or some version will be adopted is unknown. In the meantime, it is important to vigorously fight against discrimination in any forms.
