Minimum Wage Earners Struggle to Afford Modest Homes

A recent report determined that Georgia residents who earn minimum wage would need to work nearly 100 hours to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment. The report looked at communities across the United States to determine whether minimum wage earners would be able to rent a 2-bedroom apartment in any community.

According to the study, Georgia workers would have to earn roughly $22.10 per hour to be able to afford such space. Georgia has the 27th highest cost of living.

Federal Law – the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) – requires that employers pay their employees at least the federal minimum wage (currently $7.25). In some states and municipalities, this is higher. For example City of Atlanta minimum wage earners are slated for an increase to $15/hour. However  as the study reveals, despite making minimum wage, it may be hard to make ends meet. Thus it is crucial that you receive all of the wage and overtime pay you are rightfully entitled to.

If you believe you have been denied wages due to violations of the FLSA such as mis-classifying you as an independent contractor or exempt employee when you are non-exempt and entitled to overtime pay, or making you work through breaks without compensation, or any other wage and hour violation, please give our experienced Georgia employment lawyers a call immediately for a confidential case evaluation.
