Facebook Faces Race Discrimination Charges

A lawsuit filed in federal court asserts that the social media giant Facebook unlawfully discriminated against two black employees at its North Carolina data center. According to the complaint, the two employees were subjected to several acts of harassment, including a facility manager using racial slurs whenever referring to black employees. When the employees reported the discrimination, they then allegedly faced retaliation. Further, the employees stated that they were paid less than white colleagues.

Pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal to discriminate against employees, or applicants for jobs, on the basis of race. Additionally, in order to protect the rights of workers who do speak up, it is also illegal to retaliate against those who complain about discrimination directed at them or or someone else in the workplace. Retaliation generally includes actions that are designed to make people afraid to assert their rights such as giving workers undesirable shifts, giving them poor reviews when unwarranted, or placing them under increased scrutiny.

A representative of Facebook denies the allegations.
